Tax Breakdown
HST stands for Harmonized Sales Tax, which is a combination of the federal GST (5%) and a provincial sales tax (PST) into a single, unified tax. The HST is used in five Canadian provinces that have agreed to merge their provincial sales tax with the federal GST into a single tax, collected by the federal government. These provinces are: Ontario, Newfoundland and Labrador, Nova Scotia, Prince Edward Island , and New Brunswick.
Here is the list of current HST rates in 2025 in the five provinces of Canada:

How to use the Ontario tax calculator?
How is HST calculated?
The HST in Ontario, Canada, consists of two parts: a 5% federal portion and an 8% provincial portion. Therefore, the current HST rate in Ontario is 13%.
The general formula for calculating the HST amount is:
HST Amount = Price before taxes ✕ (HST rate ÷ 100)
Price including all taxes = Price before taxes + Amount of HST
For example, if you purchased a taxable product for $500, then:
HST Amount = $500 ✕ (13 ÷ 100)
HST Amount = $65
To calculate GST and PST separately, we have:
GST Amount = Price before taxes ✕ (GST rate ÷ 100)
GST Amount = $500 ✕ (5 ÷ 100)
GST Amount = $25
Similarly, to calculate the TVP,
VAT Amount = Price before taxes ✕ (VST rate ÷ 100)
PST Amount = $500 ✕ (8 ÷ 100)
PST Amount = $40
So, HST = GST Amount + PST Amount
HST = $25 + $40
HST = $65
Price including all taxes = Price before taxes + Amount of HST
Price including all taxes = $500 + $65 = $565
A Brief History of the Implementation of the HST in Canada
The Harmonized Sales Tax (HST) was introduced in Canada in 1997, initially in three provinces: New Brunswick, Newfoundland and Labrador, and Nova Scotia. Prince Edward Island joined the list of HST participating provinces in 2013 by merging its PST with the federal GST to implement the harmonized sales tax.
HST rates have undergone some changes over time. On July 1, 2016, the HST rate in New Brunswick and Newfoundland and Labrador was increased to 15%. Shortly after, on October 1, 2016, Prince Edward Island also increased its HST rate from 10% to 15%.
Currently, five provinces in Canada apply the harmonized sales tax: Ontario, Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, Newfoundland and Labrador, and Prince Edward Island.
